There are many annual events in California and the kick-off seems to be the Great Dickens Christmas Fair in San Francisco. Beginning November 28th through December 21st, this fair is open every weekend.
The Victorian Christmas event in Nevada City sounds like fun too! It's every Wednesday evening on December 3rd, 10th & 17th, and Sunday afternoon on December 14th & 21st. Nevada City is a charming little city, whether you visit in winter or summer.
And how about the Shasta Dinner Train? I think it sounds like a lot of fun for New Years Eve!
