I promised...

that I would show you the new "long-term" project I've started.

Obviously, it involves Hexagons - 1" hexagons to be exact. I never have a plan, which is how I like to make quilts, so I'm not sure how I'll put it all together. I don't think I want the traditional "Grandmother's Flower Garden" look though.

Maybe I'll try diamonds...I'm just not sure yet.

I need to make a lot more hexies and then start playing around. I'll make you a bet, that I end up having to make more hexies from fabrics I've already used! lol That's just the way it works when you don't plan anything!

I started this project because I'm always looking for projects that I can carry with me to my LOTE meetings. A lot of times, I'll take my knitting, but if the pattern requires paying attention then that doesn't work. This should keep me occupied for quite awhile don't you think?

  1. I love the diamond setting idea! The fabrics you've chosen would look wonderful surrounded by black hexagons.

I always think hexagons look adorable all stacked up!

  2. Wow, the patience needed to iron all those hexagons astounds me! I sure love all the fabrics.
It will be a nice hand sewing project to carry around. I'll look forward to seeing what you do with them.

  3. I'm not into hexies, but sure do admire your patience in cutting all these out.
A very old fashioned pattern though and still very popular way to use up scraps.
Love the colours...you will need thousands right?

  5. What a great tote around project!! I'm not a fan of the traditional setting, but the idea of diamonds would be beautiful in these wonderful fabrics :0)

  6. Your hexagons from those gorgeous fabrics are so funky cool. Looking forward to seeing your flowers or whatever design you put them into. Combining the oh-so modern fabrics in a traditional pattern is so interesting to see.

Working with hexagons and making some sort of flower garden quilt used to be at the very bottom of my list of quilts-I-want-to-make. But the world of blogging stepped in. I saw the fun and versatility of hexagon projects. I tried it, knowing it would be easy to back out with not a lot of time or materials invested. I LOVE it. It's portable, versatile, and I can still be quilting at those times and places where a sewing machine just would be out of place.
    Enjoy those hexies!

  7. I don't plan too far ahead on my projects either. I start with an idea and see where it takes me. I love my English paper piecing projects. Like you, I'm not doing a Grandmother's flower garden. I look forward to seeing where your new project takes you.

  10. Whatever you make with these, it certainly won't look like a traditional Grandmother's quilt with those gorgeous fabrics. They look like a collection of buttons -- or even lapel pins. Can't wait to see the results!
