It's been so long and seems like a million lifetimes ago. That might sound extreme, but that's how it's felt.

Take care,

We took our annual trip to Mammoth Lakes and it was as relaxing and lovely as always. I can always feel the stress and worries drain from my body as we spend time in nature. It might be just a tad on the quiet side, only because we've done it so often, but we always manage to find something new-to-us to see or do.

I was working on these socks while we were there and they are still not finished. I'm almost to the toe of the second sock, but that doesn't count as finished. I love the color of this yarn. It felt like Fall in Mammoth since the nights were in the high 20s/low 30s so it was the perfect color.
I spent about 6 hours in my backyard today. Watering plants and reading, while my husband kept me company and repaired a large terracotta pot with epoxy. When it's dry (the pot), I'll spray paint it black and plant a Plumeria stem that I cut off our large plant a couple weeks ago and hardened off.

While living in this house, I have never spent that much time relaxing in the yard. We used to spend hours and hours in our backyard when we lived in Camarillo, but that was mostly weeding, mowing, pruning, etc., etc. We do that in this yard too, obviously, but way less since it's a much smaller yard. We've decided we finally have an adult yard. One we can enjoy instead of constantly having to work to keep it up. I have to say we've certainly earned it and it's heavenly.
I actually love it... a lot! It was an easy bag to make since the pattern is so well written. Noodlehead and Dog Under My Desk are two of my favorite bag designers and pattern writers for that very reason.

I haven't made a bag like this in a very long time and I admit I was a bit nervous about it. Funny isn't it? You DO lose it if you don't use it!

I didn't have a single problem and although Noodlehead doesn't call for using Soft & Stable, I like my bags with the added structure it provides. This is a great size for a crossbody bag I think, but I think just for fun I'm going to make the smaller size included in the pattern.

This was also the first time I've used a twist-lock closure. It wasn't difficult, but I learned a thing or two I would do different next time.

This is a UFO started last October (2017) when my friend Pat was visiting. It's also February's project for the AllPeopleQuilt2018 UFO Challenge. (I'm only 4 days late getting it done so I feel good about that.) Anyway, Pat and I spent a day cutting out our bags even though we knew we wouldn't have time to sew them. I actually thought I would get mine done right away after Pat left, but here we are in the beginning of March. I truly do enjoy crossing those UFOs off the list! :)

Take care,
It helped so much to use markers and I don't know why it didn't occur to me to use them in the first place. Anyway, it's finished and I'm quite pleased with it.
I've cleaned my wood floors and the powder bath, done three loads of laundry, taken the trash out to be picked up tomorrow, solved a scary computer problem, blocked my Raindrops on Roses Shawl, and read the newspaper (which I love to do on Sundays). I have a long list of things that need to be done, but I'm taking the rest of the day off.

I was looking around my sewing room and thought it might be fun to post pictures of what it looks like today. It's always piled since I have more "stuff" than room to store stuff!
And, last but certainly not least... I ordered some fabric last week. It's the first time in a very long, long time that I've ordered more than just a yard or two and I don't even do that very often. You can see that I don't need any more fabric. With that said, these are Kaffe, Kathy Doughty, and Anna Maria Horner fabrics that I've been wanting for awhile. Thought the time was right since February is my birthday month! Happy Birthday to me! :)
Free Spirit Fabrics will be shut down by parent company Coats.

A letter sent to designers today Stephanie Leichtweis,
who became president of North American Crafts at Coats in October,
stated, “We have worked diligently for the past few years to make this a
successful part of the Coats Craft business here in North America. But
I am sorry to say that, despite our best efforts, we have continued to
struggle with an inherent weakness in the business model and have not
been able to demonstrate a profit.”

The letter goes on to say, “We will not be producing new Westminster or FreeSpirit Fabrics from today onwards.”

Orders placed to date for delivery prior to May 31 will be fulfilled.
It is unclear at this time what will happen to designers who are
currently under contract with Free Spirit some of whom are among the
biggest names in the quilting industry including Tula Pink, Kaffe
Fasset, Amy Butler, Anna Maria Horner, and Denyse Schmidt, among many
others. It’s also unclear at this time what will happen to the company
employees.

The full text of the letter is below. We will publish more information as it becomes available.

I'm shocked at this news, to say the least. This company has some of the very best designers (imho) in the business and they weren't able to make a profit. I know I had plenty of problems with them when I had my shop, but this is just really unbelievable.

I feel badly for the designers and anyone working there who was given no notice of this. This is life changing for people. I know it happens every day, but it just breaks my heart. The world is constantly changing and sometimes I just don't feel like going along for the ride. :(
Our weather prediction is for a tiny bit of rain this next week, but we'll see how that goes.

Anyway, I purchased some new yarn... BMFA STR Lightweight, of course, although I do have some "new to me" yarn coming soon. Colorways are Aubergenius and Mustang Sally and are they gorgeous or what!! I've decided to make another shawl, this time the Raindrops on Roses pattern. I'll be using the Mustang Sally so it will look very similar to the shawl pictured on the pattern when I'm finished. I like that it uses only one skein of yarn because that's all I have in that colorway.

I'm also working on my Traverse Bag. I'm taking it slow since I haven't made a bag in quite some time and it's so easy to make a mistake that can't be fixed. Especially with limited fabric. :)

I love Sundays... I'll be casting on my shawl as soon as I finish with this post, we've already eaten the glorious Blueberry Dutchbaby I made, the house is clean and chores are done, and hubby just got back from the market with the fresh blueberries, Sure Jell, and lids I needed for the Blueberry Jam I'm planning on making this afternoon.
It always feels good to finish a project, but then I feel a little bit lost until I figure out what I'm going to do next.

I'm most excited about the Sunburst Christmas Tree Skirt. It was a blast to make and went together easily and quickly. I decided against heavy quilting since it really doesn't need it. Each "starburst" section was assembled QAYG so it's already quilted to some degree. I just stitched in the ditch between each "starburst" section and I'm happy. Besides, if all goes well, it will not be all that visible behind gifts, right? :)

I mentioned that I was working on the tree skirt as a part of the All People Quilt 2018 UFO Challenge and it did spur me on to get it completed in January. I finished it on the 29th... right under the wire.

I just checked and February's project is #9 on our lists. That's the Traverse Bag for me! I cut it out in October of last year when my friend Pat was here. We were going to work on them together and get them finished the week she was here visiting but that fell by the wayside quickly. We were too busy visiting quilt shops and just generally having fun doing other things. Anyway, I'm anxious to get started on it and get it completed! It's always fun to cross these UFO/WIP projects off the list!

In addition, I got the Go With the Flow socks finished too. I had to rip out at least half a sock two times while I was working on these, so I basically knit three socks! I don't ever mind ripping out and starting again since I love to knit and it's just more knitting! :)

I understand the pattern has been discontinued and that's a shame. I wonder why?

Take care,
I've got the skirt done, and the backing is pinned but now I'm trying to decide if I want it quilted or not. I like the look of it the way it is and could just quilt in the ditch for each "spike" of the skirt to secure it. It would also look good to quilt following the "chevron" of the fabric strips (if that makes any sense).

I started and finished these in August and knit another pair of Tesserae's in November. This one was a new-to-me pattern and I found it interesting to knit. I will definitely make more of this pattern as it fits really well. Waffle Creams by Anne Hanson. Her patterns always make me happy!
These are all made from the same pattern... the Forget Me Not Shawl pattern by Adrienne Ku. It's easy to knit and it's a pretty "fabric" when finished. I used sock yarn scraps for all three of these shawls and just combined as I went along.

Here's the first:

The darker shade is a dark purple, although it might almost look black in the photo. It looks purple IRL.

Here's the second:

... and here's the third one:

Forgive the photos on this one... irl the shawl is much brighter, more blue, more green, and more magenta... if that makes any sense. I'll take outdoor photos and I'm sure they will look more realistic when I take the "pretty" photos of all five so I can list them for sale in my etsy shop. My husband is going to take them into his workplace first so maybe I won't be listing all five. :)

The Liatris Hat is finished and I'm quite happy with it! It's a beret-style and looks cute when it's on. Too bad I don't have a model for the photos! :)
Last, but not least, I started a new pair of socks. The Go With The Flow sock pattern. I've made it before, it's easy to knit, and an interesting design. The yarn is BMFA STR Lightweight colorway Pop Rocks. They're going to be pretty!
Still using BMFA STR (a Rare Gems colorway) but in a much darker color than I've used before. It's a gorgeous color, but I found it difficult to see my stitches while knitting with it. That said, I got it done (with a little ripping out here and there) and I think it's lovely.

I'm new to blocking so I'm not sure I'm doing it the "right" way, but the first one turned out nicely so I'm doing it the same way I did that one. If someone knows a better way, please let me know.

We were also out in the yard yesterday doing a bit of weeding. It was a bit breezy, but the temperature was just perfect. The ground was still a bit wet from the rains so the weeds came up easy. I love it when that happens, but since we got the two new Queen palms and the rest of the border planted, I've been making a special effort to get them pulled before they mature. I'm happy to say that the herbs I planted at the same time are doing well, as well as the two Bougainvillea we put in.

Oregano... Mmm, love it and use a lot of it in my cooking. It's great on roasted potato wedges with olive oil, salt & pepper.
I'll post them for you to see when they are all finished and looking pretty! I started one while we were in Mammoth Lakes for a week and while setting it out to block it brought back good memories of a fun trip. I love when that happens.

This is actually the very last one I finished, but it's the easiest to block since there weren't many ends that needed to be woven in. It's the Reyna Shawl and I used BMFA STR Lightweight yarn to knit it. Can't remember the colorway, but it's pretty! It's an easy knit and looks very elegant.

It's what I call "neutral" in color, but it has the very lightest hint of pink in some areas. These photos are taken with a lens I forgot I had and so I'm playing around with it. The little sparkles are water droplets.

While I'm taking photos I thought you should see my Liatris Hat also. It's gonna be a pretty one! I used Ella Rae Lace Merino for this one... only because I had it and wanted to get it used up. I wouldn't have purposely picked this yarn for this hat, but I really like it now that I'm using it.

Ok... I like being a little flexible, but it does mean things change, doesn't it. That's the case with QuiltCon. One minute I'm going, the next I'm not. I'm disappointed I won't get to see my good friend, but other than that it's definitely ok with me.

Oh, a side note... I've been growing out my hair since October. I'm not quite sure how I feel about it, but I'm hanging in there. I haven't had hair this long (it's halfway between my chin and shoulders) since my late 30s and frankly, I haven't found a way to style it yet that I like. It's not long enough to pull into a "ponytail." Naturally curly hair has always been a challenge for me. I told my husband that I would have lived an entirely different life if I had born with straight hair! :)

Also, you probably shouldn't get used to me posting three times a week... I think it's just a fluke that it worked out that way this week. :) I'm also on Instagram as @quilternity if you're interested.

Take care,
It's such a lovely and peaceful place. We eat at Andria's Seafood and always have their Halibut & Chips. They are so, so good and we think, much better than the cod.

The temperature was perfect and so was the late afternoon light. Unfortunately, I didn't have my good camera with me so I used my husband's iPhone. It takes pretty good pictures for a phone. I'm always surprised, but know I shouldn't be. Technology, right? :)

I loved the texture on these leaves and remembered that the last time we walked by this plant I wished I had taken a photo. Got it today. Next time I hope to have the good camera, although I do need to re-educate myself on the camera and photography. That's one of my 2018 goals.
How does that happen so quickly? It's somewhat dishearterning, don't you think? :)

I'm participating in the All People Quilt 2018 UFO Challenge and my #12 project was this Star Burst Christmas Tree Skirt. At first I was disappointed that I would be working on a Christmas pattern and then I realized that it might be a very good thing. I might actually get it completed before next Christmas.

I think what originally attracted me to this pattern was the fabrics/colors she chose. I love anything that has that beautiful lemony green in it. I'm incorporating a bit into mine also, but mine will look very different when it's done, I'm sure.

I've been working on it in the evenings for the last couple days and I've managed to get one strip set completed. One more to go...

In addition to working on the above UFO, I had to start a new project too. I can easily knit while watching TV with my husband in the evenings so I started a hat. The Liatris hat. I've never knit a hat before and this pattern is certainly not difficult. I think it's going to be quite nice when finished.

I have very good intentions for this year in terms of posting to the blog more regularly. I actually miss it, but have found myself without the time or the desire the last six months or so of 2017.

I have plans to attend QuiltCon in Pasadena next month. I'm meeting a friend that I don't get to see very often and miss. I have another friend that hasn't quilted in years, but is very crafty/creative and I'm going to ask her if she would like to go along. Should be a fun day!!

Take care,
It was a tough year for me personally and took the wind out of my sails, so to speak. December was an especially difficult month. I'm optimistic that 2018 will be a much, much, much better year.

I did get some projects finished last year. They weren't things that I had planned on doing, but they kept me busy and provided much-needed "therapy." I knit five shawls and although they are finished, they have yet to be blocked because I'm waiting on blocking wires and mats. Needless to say I have no photos of them - yet!

I also made 12 mug rugs in December and my husband (great sales person that he is) sold 6 of them for me. 2 of them were gifts and the others will be forthcoming in my etsy shop. I haven't worked on any projects yet this year, but I'm starting to get myself organized so that I can focus.

I'm also feeling grateful already since I was able to take a nice walk today... unlike those of you in the path of the "bomb cyclone" or just living in areas that are freezing cold. Stay safe and stay warm.
Our group is always a bit sad when we have to get out of the pool and know it's for the last time this session. It's been 8 weeks of pure heaven! :) We've been very lucky and have had the most gorgeous weather, which has assured us of fairly warm water in the pool. Ten months until we start up this class again. :)

My hydrangeas have gone absolutely crazy this year and actually need to be pruned at some point. I went out and picked a couple flowers this morning to bring in the house and they are lovely. I had a range of colors this year from a very light green, through blue and lavender to light and hot pink. They are all still blooming, but it's beginning to slow down a bit.

I'm going to try to knit a pair of socks... a new (to me) pattern. I have missed knitting in the evenings... it helps me to relax before going to bed. As always, I'm using BMFA STR lightweight in this gorgeous green color. I think the pattern I've picked out will look wonderful with this fairly solid colored yarn. I love the STR so much that I don't know if I'll ever be able to try any other sock yarn.
I love the fountain... it's color dark and shiny as the water cascades down, and that heavenly sound of the water flowing from one tier to the next. I haven't used this room much since we moved in years ago, but decided it was time and moved my laptop down to the desk so I can enjoy this view more often.
I'm making slow, but steady progress with my finger, I think. I say I think because one day I can do my exercises and see progress and the next day it's stiff and swollen. I just want to be able to use it.

I've been reading more than usual since I cannot yet knit, quilt, embroider, rotary cut, or use my camera. Reading The Woman in Cabin 10 right now and it's tough to put down!

My husband and I did work in our front yard today pulling weeds and pruning several bushes and trees that had become overgrown. Slowly, but very surely our yard is starting to look better. And, I made Chocolate Chip Scones.

I guess that's a pretty nice Sunday, isn't it? :)
Since then, I've done almost nothing of any consequence since the use of my finger has been very limited... and still is. However, I've finally healed enough to start Physical Therapy and they tell me that in about 2 months time, I should have a fully functioning finger again! Yippee! I'm truly grateful that my injury was not worse than it was, because it easily could have been. I'm lucky! I do miss knitting and quilting though!

Today I'm thrilled because we had two Queen Palms planted in our backyard border. It's something I've wanted to have done for the last 10 years. This is what the back border looks like today.

I've got some 1 gallon-size plants that I want to plant in between and around the Palms but I won't get to that for awhile.
My Jelly Roll Race Gone Plaid... and, I love it!! I finished it 3/31/17 and I'm just a bit surprised it took me so long to complete since I started working on it mid-January. I know I haven't had much time in the sewing room, but mid-January? :))

Actually in my own defense, I've been very busy working out in our yard. Last March I tore out the backyard borders, covered them in newspaper layers, and topped them with bark. In the meantime, I've been pulling any weeds that managed to grow through and finally decided it was time to start planting. We had to rent an auger since there are so many roots from the trees planted behind our property that's it's impossible to dig through. The Auger worked well and it was fun to get a great many holes dug in one afternoon. The majority have been filled with plants which are doing well and there's just one 20 ft area where I'll need professional help since I want to plant another three good-sized palm trees.

My herb garden is doing extremely well. I'll be using a lot of it fresh, and drying quite a bit for my own use, but I have so much I would like to share. If you are in my neck of the woods and would like some fresh herbs, give me a holler via email.

I've also finished the knitting project I have been working on for five months so now I'll have to think of another project to keep me busy in the evenings in front of the tv.

I've still got these blocks to sell... if you think the price I'm asking is too high, please make me an offer! :)
a Kathy Doughty class since I'm trying to raise some $$ for a few of my
favorite charities. Although they are technically "plates" and not blocks, I'm referring to them as blocks. I've played and played with them and cannot figure
out where to go from here. Hopefully someone out there will love them
and have a great use for them.

Ok... here's the scoop. There are 13 blocks in total. To finish each block the two halves need to be sewn together. The photo shows just 1/2 of each block so you can see the diversity. The yellow and blue block on the far left is the smallest of the group measuring 16" across. The yellow and green block in the far upper left is 18" across and the REST of the blocks are 20" across. I didn't realize that I had made two of the blocks smaller until I got them out for this photo. Oh... the second half of the red/pink block on the bottom far left is not sewn together but all the pieces will be included. Easy to sew together... will take five minutes! :)

Anyway, I'm asking $80 for all 13 blocks, which includes shipping. Just send me an email at imquilternity at yahoo dot com if you have questions are are interested! It will ALL go to Feeding America!

If you think my price is too high, please make me a reasonable offer!!

Take care,
What I have been doing is working on this UFO project as well as another ongoing project (consisting of finished units).

This quilt has been fun actually, even though when I dragged it out to work on it I was less than thrilled. I got into it as time progressed and now it's turning out to be one of my favorite quilts.

I originally made a Jelly Roll Race quilt out of scrappy, 2 1/2 inch strips of different lengths. They were basically left over from other projects and when I finished it I didn't care for it and stuck it into the UFO pile. When I got it out again to work on, I decided to treat the quilt top as fabric and cut it into 9 1/2" blocks. I happened to be looking at Karla Alexander's book, Color Shuffle, at the time and liked the Plaid Passions pattern... so my quilt is based loosely on that pattern, although I made it narrower because I like "banner" size so I can hang it on my wall.

I've got it basted (and the pins are closed) now and I'm getting ready to start quilting it. I'm going to do a plaid quilting design... should be easy and I think it will look great with the quilt.

Take care,
It was overcast and cold and absolutely beautiful! We took a short walk along the harbor and the beach and it was just ever so breezy. It was invigorating!
